The company’s highest-profile movie of 2024 was a glitzy Cannes acquisition (“Emilia Pérez”), but its biggest hit was a literal airport thriller that was silly enough to watch with one eye, and solid enough to reward watching with two. Sure enough, one of my favorite things about “Carry-On” is that I didn’t care that I was watching it on my computer. For some genre fans, the inventive premise here might be enough.

Everyone else in the movie feels completely disposable, and characters who seem like they should be important are quickly removed from the board in ways that aren’t emotional or gnarly enough to resonate. Werewolves is stuffed with overwrought inspirational speeches that read like mantras you might find on a police or fire department’s wall. (“Always ready!” is a repeated battle cry.) It all leads to a final fight that should feel epic but ends up being more disappointment. A former family man whose gambling debts led him towards white-collar crime, Don is not the kind of guy capable of murder. Instead of doing the deed, he kidnaps Phyllis with a plan to take her to Washington State.

Instead of covering Bob Dylan’s life story from birth to old age, it covers the period shortly after his arrival in New York City, as he first begins to fall in with the city’s folk music scene. Timothée Chalamet plays Dylan — and does all his own singing. We see Dylan become a superstar, as well as his famous set at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival —where he and his band plugged in for an electrified set that’s often viewed as a cultural turning point in America. All that being said, my (slightly) more realistic hope for 2025 is that Netflix stops making things that people would actually want to see anywhere else.

December 21, 2024 • There’s been a bit of consternation flying around about the fact that the theatrical release of Juror #2, directed by Clint Eastwood, was very muted. Spellbound is not to be confused with the 1945 Alfred Hitchcock film noir of… Robert Eggers’ remake of the iconic vampire classic makes several clever changes to the story of the original 1922 movie starring Max Schreck. Iron Man is the hero who started it all in the MCU, and while he is often quoted, he had plenty of other lines that go under the radar in the movies. There’s an intimidating amount of great anime out there, but certain shows and movies are perfect for those looking to get into the art form.

But that gives way to the non-stop lens flares that blanket the rest of the film. (Even J.J. Abrams would take one look at this and say, “Okay, let’s go ahead and dial those flares back by at least half.”) There are a few seconds of decent gore, earning the film its R rating. For the large part of the film’s runtime, this is a slick two-hander between the soulful Whigham and larger-than-life Coon. Their banter is purposely hard-boiled, with just a dash of world-weary wisdom. Whigham has always been an actor capable of broadcasting a large array of nuanced emotions with just a glance or a tilt of his head, and in Don finds the perfect role to showcase his endless capabilities for emotional depth. As Don finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into Phyllis’s world of blood and grisly violence, he says more with his eyes than he does with his words.

Even the motivations of the werewolves remain unclear, as their behavior is often dictated by what the scene needs. Sometimes they’re just killing machines; other times, they retain some of the humanity within. While sometimes they pack up together in groups, when it’s convenient, they’re just as much a danger to each other as they are to any unchanged humans nearby. I love how it finds the darkness of the human soul within the stark, bright light of the Southern California sun. Often, these films begin in the City of Angels but make their way to the outskirts of the region, in desolate parts of the San Fernando Valley or the San Gabriel mountains, the Inland Empire, or the Death Valley desert. In writer-director Jeffrey Reiner’s “Lake George,” two misfits go on a crime odyssey that takes them through almost all these desolate, lonely places. Grillo, who also starred in a couple of actual Purge movies (which have a bit more going on under the hood), is his usual, reliable self, despite Werewolves being devoid of fun or interesting characters for him to bounce off of.
